For decades, India measured agricultural success by production. The farmer experiences agriculture differently: what matters is not only what the country produces, but what the household retains. The Political Economy of the Indian Farmer: The Modi Chapter follows that shift across twelve years of policy. It reads direct income support, crop insurance, irrigation and soil programmes as a floor beneath the farm household, and infrastructure, markets, credit and producer organisations as a ladder toward enterprise. It examines India’s digital turn, from direct benefit transfers to AgriStack, and the growth of horticulture, dairy, fisheries and exports. And it takes the politics seriously: federalism, the farm-law episode, and the question of trust between farmers and the state. The result is an analytical account of agricultural transformation as a system rather than a list of schemes, and a guide to the choices ahead on the road to 2047.

Deepak Pareek is an agriculture economist, technology strategist and author with more than 25 years of experience across 30+ countries. He co-founded MyCrop Technologies, named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer in 2018, and has led AgriWatch and HnyB Tech-Incubations.

Deepak Pareek is an agriculture economist, technology strategist and author based in Ahmedabad, India, with more than 25 years of experience across agriculture, technology and markets in over 30 countries. An engineer by training, he began in information and communications technology consulting, advising clients including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, and wrote books on telecommunications published by Wiley and CRC Press. He moved into agriculture as co-founder and chief executive of MyCrop Technologies, a farmer-advisory platform named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer in 2018; its DigiAgri platform was a finalist in UNDP’s Cultiv@te programme. He has served as chief executive of AgriWatch, an agricultural market-intelligence firm, and founded HnyB Tech-Incubations. He speaks at international forums on food systems and agricultural technology, including the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali. The Political Economy of the Indian Farmer is his account of India’s agricultural transformation.
